My Aunt Joan sadly passed away from a 25+ year battle with cancer on February 5, 2013, so when I got an email two weeks later announcing that the 2013 Chicago Marathon was open for registration, I didn't think twice about signing up...again. I might be crazy, but I'm so excited to be able to raise money to benefit my family's cancer foundation, Pink SOCS (Sisters of Cancer Survivors) . It makes training for the BIG 26.2 a little bit less painful knowing that I am supporting my family in their desire to help those affected by this awful disease. As many of you know my family is no stranger to cancer. When my aunt passed away this winter, she was my third aunt to lose her battle with this horrible disease in less than three and a half years. Needless to say, it has not been an easy few years. Knowing firsthand how tough life can be when someone you love is fighting for their own life, my family started the Pink SOCS Foundation in 2008. A cancer diagnosis often brings along a significant financial burden, even for those who are covered by insurance. In creating this foundation, my family hopes to be able to help relieve some of that burden. To date we have been able to give out over $70,000 to families in need to help cover everyday expenses, whether it be utility bills, medical bills or simply being able to put food on the table. We have also given away over $27,000 in scholarships to help high school graduates who have been affected by cancer further their education. I am honored to be running this year's marathon on behalf of Pink SOCS and hope that you will support me by making a donation to help those affected by cancer. Your donations are appreciated more than you know. You can donate directly to the Pink SOCS Foundation via PayPal ( Note for Kelly’s Marathon) or send a check made payable to 'Pink SOCS Foundation' to: Pink SOCS Foundation 1610 Kenyon Ave South Plainfield, NJ 07080 Wish me luck as I take on marathon #2 in honor of my ***Three Stars up in the Sky***
